History Unit

The Kwara State University, established in 2009, recognizes itself as a centre for community development and entrepreneurship and therefore strives to make its impact felt in the community. As part of this vision, the B. A. History programme was approved for commencement in 2009 to train and produce students with national and community focus as well as strong engagement in archival and field research. However, the programme did not commence until 2012 with forty-three (43) students as its pioneers. The programme now has a total of Seven Hundred and Eighteen (718) students. Hitherto, History co-existed with Heritage Studies as a department from the inception of the programmes in the University until its merger with the Department of Religions in 2017. Subsequently, both History and Heritage Studies exist, till now, as separate units in the Department of Religions, History and Heritage Studies.

The History programme took off with two permanent staff, Dr. Abdul Salau and Mr. Ismail Otukoko, two adjunct staff, namely Prof. S. A. Ajayi and Prof J. O. Aleru, and two other visiting scholars namely, Dr. Usman Aribidesi and Dr. M. B. Salau, both from the USA.
